2-Day Suriname Trip & a Glimpse of St. Laurent
Step into the wild heart of the Guianas — UNESCO Paramaribo, river dolphins, and a border crossing into French Guiana to walk the halls of the prison once home to Papillon.
Jungle meets culture, across two countries
Explore Paramaribo's UNESCO streets, where Dutch gables meet mosques and synagogues side by side. Cruise the Suriname River in search of river dolphins, then cross into Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, French Guiana — walking the haunting halls of its colonial prison, once home to the legendary Papillon.
Along the way: vibrant markets, coffee in tropical courtyards, and Creole flavors on both sides of the border. Centuries of colonial and penal history, two distinct cultures, and one continuous river valley connecting them — this trip covers more ground than almost any other two-day itinerary in the Guianas.

Paramaribo Historic City Tour
Immerse yourself in the UNESCO World Heritage centre, where European architecture meets local building materials.
Walk Independence Square, flanked by the Presidential Palace and the wooden buildings of Lim A Po straat. Visit Fort Zeelandia, the 17th-century riverside fortress, and the wooden Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral.
Nature & history at Peperpot Nature Park
Cross the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge into Commewijne to this former coffee and cocoa plantation, reclaimed by nature.
Spot capuchin and squirrel monkeys, sloths and tropical birds along canopy-covered trails, and explore the remnants of the historic plantation coffee factory and director's residence.
Commewijne River Dolphin Cruise
Board a traditional wooden tent boat from the Leonsberg pier and cruise to the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers.
Watch playful Estuarine dolphins surface around the boat, with local snacks like barra and bakabana on board as the sun sets over the river delta.
Cross-border expedition to French Guiana

A scenic ~2.5-hour drive east through the savanna landscape to the border town of Albina.
The border crossing
A short pirogue (wooden canoe) ride across the Marowijne River to clear customs and enter Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, French Guiana.
Camp de la Transportation
A guided tour of the notorious historic French penal transit camp where prisoners like Henri Charrière ("Papillon") were processed. Walk the preserved cell blocks and learn the history of the penal system.
