A day in the maroon culture
Santigron is a Maroon village on the Saramacca River.
The village is the closest traditional village from Paramaribo (30 km) and has a special history.
Meet the local people, visiting the church and school in the village.
The Saramaccan culture is special and rich, it is worth delving into it.
Literally Santigron means, (Sandy ground).
The bright white savannah sand of the old coastal plain of Suriname is very pleasant and fits your holiday feeling.
The village has about 1750 inhabitants, and although traditional and small-scale, it is getting more and more urban features due to its location.
This makes it accessible to tourists but also authentic.
Besides the tour and history there is also a special cultural side.
A dance will be performed by the locals, the Awasa and the Songue (dance of the fish).
The woodcarving also gets special attention on this tour and there is also the opportunity to take a nice dip or to chill in a hammock.
The tour is conducted by the village itself and you will be welcomed enthusiastically.
A fun and varied tour, where you do not have to cover such a great distance to still experience the life of the Maroons.
