SLOTH WATCHING TOUR IN PARAMARIBO

From THE XENARTHRANS, there are 10 anteater species, 7  sloth species in the world, and 22 armadillo species.
In Suriname you have a great chance to spot two types of sloths:
1. Pale-Throated Three-Toed Sloth (Bradypus tridactylus)
2. Southern Two-Toed Sloth(Choloepus didactylus)

During this tour we will head to Cultuurtuin, this is a nice secondairy forest at the back of the Paramaribo Zoo. A few years ago Green Heritage Fund Suriname rescued Sloth and released them safely in the Cultuurtuin forest.

We’ll walk silently and patiently to spot the SLOTHS!

The tourguide will tell you more about these slow moving animals. Are you wondering WHY they are slow?

Departure: every day with a minimum of 2 participant.
Time: 16.00 – 19:00 PM, 3 hours (also possible to start later)

SLOTHS ARE EXTREMELY VULNERABLE TO DEFORESTATION

Most sloths are listed as least concern on the IUCN redlist of threatened species. But threats in the form of some of the habitat loss and fragmentation and the illegal wildlife trade still exist. At present, some subpopulations, especially in Colombia and the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, are declining due to deforestation and degradation of their habitat. In Suriname the rate of logging is increasing, but will there be some change in it?

These tree-dwelling mammals rely on the health of tropical rainforests for food, shelter and space. So, as trees get cut down, the rainforest may shrink along with its inhabitants, one of them being the slow yet steady sloth.
