Wander through a bygone era as you explore old sugar, cocoa and coffee plantations and admire the impressive fortifications of Fort Nieuw Amsterdam. Stroll along the idyllic canals and locks, where silent testimonies of the past are still visible. A highlight of the tour is the restored Frederiksdorp plantation, where neglected workers’ homes have been transformed into comfortable accommodations and the former prison serves as a charming restaurant. This enchanting journey offers insight not only into the rich heritage of Commewijne, but also into the daily lives of the local people, with fishing, livestock farming and small-scale farming as essential activities.

Day 1 – 

Explore the historic Commewijne district during our Plantation Tour, which starts at 9:00 AM from Leonsbergsteiger. First we visit the 17th century Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, an open-air museum with a rich history. We then sail to the Rust en Werk plantation, where we explore the beautiful creek depending on the tide. Then we go to the restored Frederiksdorp plantation for a tour. During lunch with a local plantation resident in Johanna-Margaretha you will enjoy the local hospitality. The return journey starts at 3:00 PM and offers the chance to spot dolphins at the confluence of the Commewijne and Suriname Rivers.
