The story

One of the best birding countries on Earth

More than 750 species of birds occur in Suriname — one of the highest densities of any country in the world. On our day trips we show you a curated selection of the species that make this country a bucket-list destination for birders, guided by someone who knows exactly where to look and when.

We offer four distinct routes, each with its own specialities: the Peperpot plantation forest, the Chocopot swamp relict, the coastal Road to Sea, and the open Savannah — together covering forest, wetland, coast and grassland habitats in a single guided day.

Where we go

Four habitats, one unforgettable day

01

Peperpot

An old coffee and cocoa plantation in the Commewijne district, protected by the Peperpot Natuurbos Foundation since 2009. When the Inga and Erythrina trees bloom, hummingbirds swarm the canopy — alongside a chance of Puma, Pale-throated Three-toed Sloth and several monkey species.

02

Chocopot

A 100-hectare relict of a once much larger swamp forest, cut through by a single walking path. Ten years of sightings of the Crimson-hooded Manakin here, plus a real chance of the elusive Great Potoo — a nightjar so well camouflaged it looks like a broken tree stump.

03

Road to Sea

Northwest of Paramaribo, where we search for the rare Rufous Crab Hawk along with Scarlet Ibis and Black Skimmers. At low tide, the mudflats fill with wintering waders, and the narrow creeks beside the road hide Solitary Sandpiper and American Pygmy Kingfisher.

Savannah bird tour

An open-country route across Suriname's savannah landscape — a striking contrast to the forest and coast, and the best chance of the grassland and scrub specialists that don't occur anywhere else on this itinerary.
